For more than 100 years Collie has mined Coal. With the global shift toward a low-carbon future, Collie looked to redefine its legacy. In 2020 approximately 40 artists were commissioned to create murals around Collie including the largest Dam mural in the world. An estimated 5000 people came through on the opening weekend, and it hasn’t stopped since. Due to the popularity and impact of Shakey’s heritage murals, he was invited back 7 times to tell the story of Collie’s history through his artwork.
Collie Art Trail
Testimonial
Mural Art - continuing to deliver stories for all.
Forest Explorers Tour Business is only in its infancy of three years. On average I conduct a Mural
Walking Town Tour once a fortnight, over a year.
Conducting guided tours two years ago was unlike now in 2023. A significant community shift from a
negative attitude to community members now interacting, friendly, helpful, and engaging towards
tour guides & participants.
The local people now add that extra character, life events & important information about the murals
during guided tours & self-guided tours along the streets and alleys.
Mural Arts attributed to community members of specific industries such as Mining, Timber and
Noongar Culture is now the network of union that is immense & a very part of the state’s country
fabric.
The Mural Town Trail is user friendly with easy access, improved pavement and curbing designed for
all ages and abilities.
Google reviews and other positive feedback continues to add delight for Collie’s positive road
forward.
School groups from as far as Denmark in the south to Perth in the north are traveling to see the
murals, they stay in local accommodation, spend money in the local economies and share their
photos and stories to their family & friends on returning home.
School curriculum has included the mural’s heritage, environmental (nature) and indigenous.
Forest Explorers now has bookings for 2023 term one commencement.
Forest Explorers also offers commentary at the Wellington Dam Wall which is situated in the
Wellington National Park. The Mural artist Guido Van Helton ‘Reflections” is 8000sqm depicting the
natural environment, children, cultural and heritage significance.
The awe-inspiring mural is breathtaking for those that visit, and this expansive mural is shared
globally across all spectrums.
From one Local Shire to the next we can have a strong voice from local people for people and places
is shar have a journey sharing in Mural Arts.
Being born, raised and still living in the WA country makes me feel proud to share Mural life.
It’s now embedded in preservation, not just for the Shire of Collie but for all Shires that embrace
Mural Art for their people & future generations to come.
Mural Artists, Mural’s, and Guided tours are limitless in what they give back to Western Australian
communities.
Kind Regards
Alison Melvin
