AUSTRALIAN EVENTS MISSION
“Our Art Trail is about travelling across Australia and engaging with local communities to enshrine their rich culture in a permanent artwork that pays homage to the history and characters that make those communities what they are.”
Rolling Stills consists of Ange Butler behind the lens and Jacob “Shakey” Butler behind the paintbrush. They will be assisted by their two young daughters Sadie & Sienna.
Rolling Stills wants to champion outback events by not only drawing people’s attention to them but to help tell their story through the mediums of photography and art. In the process of snapping, painting and recording these events we will be creating an online footprint in the form of an interactive map and also a physical Art Trail that people can follow. We will be working with local stakeholders, community leaders, sponsors, and regular Jill & Joes to make this happen.
Grassroots community events are the lifeblood of rural towns. They provide essential income which gets pumped back into the community and improves the quality of life for those who call Australia’s outback home. Naturally, the success of these vital events depends on people getting involved and supporting them. We hope our Art Trail will inspire people all over Australia to do just that.
Many of the events that we will be documenting are rarely mentioned in the media. In fact, the very existence of some may baffle, confuse or amuse you. That’s why we’re confident that once more people see the human face of these quirky outback oddities they’ll be keen to add them to their own road trip itineraries. After all, outback exploration is experiencing a renaissance after COVID forced many of us to explore our own backyards again. All people need is to be pointed in the right direction.
At the heart of the project, it’s the towns & communities that will benefit most from this project. More punters at the events means more income and more income means these towns can invest in essential infrastructure. Maybe even give the cobbers and cobettes a break from constant fundraising BBQs. However, we also hope to inspire those following our journey to get out and enjoy completely new experiences too. It’s a weird and wonderful world out there in the Aussie outback.
We will be departing from sunny Perth in June 2023 and working our way around Australia following quintessential outback events. On return we plan to hold an exhibition as well as produce a coffee table book.
